In 2003, a conference was held regarding "Truck Driver Safety & Health. I found this report on the CDC website and while I haven't as yet read all of it (116 pages) the introduction and description of the trucking industry seem quite accurate. It does to address some major issues near and dear to most truckers. It is worth reading. This Conference was attended by officials in government responsible for the transport industry, OSHO and NIOSH, Researchers from all over the globe, OOIDA, the Teamsters, ATA, and even Truck Drivers to name just a few. It does make interesting and provocative reading and carries the same title as this post. I have made a copy of this available just by clicking the following link. The one thing from glancing through this article that I found missing was the effect that the current Anti-Idling Laws are having on truckers. In that regard however anti-idling laws were not as widespread at the time this was written. Enjoy.
